A bus and a taxi have collided on the R40 at Rocky’s Drift between Nelspruit and White River, has left nine people dead and over forty people injured this morning.
ER24, EMRS and other emergency personnel arrived on the scene and found the bus and taxi off the road, with the bus lying on its side and extensive damage to the taxi. Commuters from the taxi and bus were found lying all around the scene and some were still entrapped inside the vehicles.
Paramedics accessed the patients and found that nine people had sustained traumatic and fatal injuries and were declared deceased on scene. Twelve people have sustained critical injuries and needed Advanced Life Support intervention. One patient was airlifted by ER24 Medicopter to Mediclinic Nelspruit for rapid medical care. Ten patients sustained serious injuries which ranged from suspected neck and back injuries to broken bones. Twenty three other patients were treated for minor to moderate injuries. Patients were stabilised on scene and transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical care.
The deceased were mainly from the taxi. The R40 was closed to traffic while the necessary authorities investigate the accident further.
