A young couple were injured after the bakkie they were in collided into a tree on New England Road, Pietermaritzburg near to the municipality rubbish dumps this morning.
ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found the bakkie firmly wedged into the tree. Both occupants were seated inside the vehicle. The driver was assessed and found that he had suffered minor to moderate injuries.
The passenger, a female was mechanical entrapped and needed the Jaws of Life to extricate her from the vehicle. She had a suspected neck and back injury and needed Advanced Life Support intervention to be performed on her. Once freed both patients were taken to a nearby hospital for further medical care.
It is unclear what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle but the local SAPS were on scene and would investigate the accident further.
